Ethics & AI Disclosure

1. AI-Assisted, Human-Directed

CoWriter is built on a single premise: the author drives the book. AI handles the heavy lifting of drafting, research, and formatting, but every major decision about what goes into your book is yours. You choose the topic, the tone, the structure, the voice, the outline, and you edit every section before it becomes final.

We do not generate books with a single click. Our 14-step wizard exists because we believe the process of writing a book matters as much as the output. Each step captures your intent, preferences, and expertise so the AI works within your boundaries, not the other way around.

2. The 14-Step Process

Our wizard is designed to embed human direction at every stage of book creation:

  • Steps 1-2: You define genre, tone, audience, unique angle, and review market context
  • Step 3: You select your title from AI-generated options or write your own
  • Step 4: You upload your own research, sources, and reference materials
  • Step 5: You create an Author Persona with a Voice DNA profile that controls writing style
  • Steps 6-9: You refine focus topics, approve the book proposal, configure structure, and build your author bio
  • Step 10: You review, reorder, rename, and approve every chapter and section in the outline
  • Step 11: You generate content section by section, with 12+ inline editing agents for granular control
  • Steps 12-14: You finalize SEO metadata, generate cover art, and export to PDF or DOCX

At no point does the platform produce a finished book without your review and approval. The outline is locked only after you sign off. Each section is generated individually, and you have full editing control before, during, and after generation.

3. Your Voice, Not Ours

Every book generated through CoWriter uses a Voice DNA profile that captures several distinct dimensions of your writing style:

  • Tone and attitude
  • Sentence style and pacing
  • Vocabulary level
  • Rhetorical devices
  • Personality quirks
  • Forbidden patterns (words and structures you want to avoid)
  • Custom writing instructions

After generation, 12+ inline editing agents let you rewrite, expand, condense, adjust tone, fix facts, or restructure any section. These agents also operate within your Voice DNA, so edits remain consistent with your established style. The goal is that the final manuscript reads like you wrote it, because you directed every aspect of it.

4. Content Ownership

You retain 100% ownership of all content created through CoWriter. This includes your book text, outlines, descriptions, cover art, and any other materials generated on the platform. CoWriter does not claim any intellectual property rights over your work.

For full details on content ownership, licensing, and your rights, see Section 4 of our Terms of Service.

Note: The legal landscape around AI-generated content and copyright is still evolving. Courts and regulatory bodies in multiple jurisdictions are actively developing frameworks for AI-assisted works. While we believe the human direction embedded in our 14-step process supports strong ownership claims, we encourage authors to stay informed about developments in their jurisdiction and consult legal counsel for specific questions about copyrightability.

5. KDP & Publishing Disclosure

If you plan to publish on Amazon KDP or other platforms, you should understand the distinction between AI-generated and AI-assisted content:

  • AI-generated content: Text, images, or translations where AI created the output with minimal human editing. KDP requires disclosure of AI-generated content during the publishing process.
  • AI-assisted content: Content where AI was used as a tool (brainstorming, grammar checking, editing suggestions, outline generation) but a human created and directed the core content. Disclosure is encouraged but not strictly required by KDP.

CoWriter's 14-step wizard is designed to place human direction at the center of the process. However, the AI does generate draft text, cover images, and translations. We strongly recommend full disclosure when publishing:

  • Disclose AI involvement during KDP's content declaration step
  • Cover art generated through the platform should be disclosed as AI-generated
  • Translations produced by the platform should be disclosed as AI-generated
  • Since 2025, KDP has actively enforced disclosure requirements. Non-disclosure can result in listing removal, account warnings, or publishing restrictions

Disclaimer: This guidance is informational only and does not constitute legal advice. Publishing platform policies change frequently. Always review the current terms and disclosure requirements of any platform where you publish. Consult a legal professional if you have questions about your specific obligations.

6. Data & Privacy

Your book content and personal data are handled with care:

  • We do not use your book content to train AI models
  • Your data is stored with industry-standard encryption
  • Books are archived, never permanently deleted, so you always have access to content you paid for
  • Payment processing is handled securely through Stripe
  • We use essential cookies only and do not deploy third-party tracking or advertising cookies

For complete details on data collection, storage, retention, and your rights, see our Privacy Policy.

7. Transparency in AI Models

We believe you should know exactly which AI systems are working on your book. CoWriter uses the following models:

  • Anthropic Claude (Opus, Sonnet, Haiku): Powers all text generation, including book content, outlines, descriptions, author bios, market analysis, and inline editing agents. Model selection depends on your subscription tier and the task complexity.
  • OpenAI GPT Image 1.5: Generates book cover art and in-book images based on detailed prompts derived from your book's genre, tone, and content.
  • Google Gemini (Nano Banana 2): Serves as an alternative image generation provider for cover art, enabling side-by-side comparison so you can choose the result you prefer.

We do not use unnamed or undisclosed AI systems. When we add or change providers, this page will be updated accordingly. All AI calls are made through official APIs with standard data processing agreements in place.
